Buying your first home is a major milestone, but once the excitement of "sold!" settles, a new question kicks in: What now? If you’ve just crossed the finish line at settlement, this checklist is here to help you tackle the next steps with clarity and confidence.
Finalise Insurance (If You Haven’t Already)
Many lenders require home insurance to be in place by settlement day, particularly for certain property types. It’s important to check your lender’s specific requirements. If you didn’t organise this earlier, make it your first task. Lenders commonly require building insurance from settlement because it relates to the condition of the secured property. A licensed insurance provider can explain policy details and coverage.
Tip: Choose a policy that starts from settlement date (not move-in), and confirm your lender is listed as an interested party.
Organise Your Move
Whether you’re hiring movers or rallying mates with utes, get your move sorted early. Booking in advance can help things run more smoothly and may, in some cases, reduce costs. Don’t forget to plan for cleaning, packing supplies, and a backup plan in case of bad weather.
Tip: Aim to move a day or two after settlement in case of delays. And label your boxes; future-you will be grateful.
Connect Utilities and Internet
Don’t spend your first night in the dark! Contact your electricity, gas, water, and internet providers ahead of time to arrange connections. Some require a few days’ notice, so get in early.
Tip: If you're unsure which providers service your new area, you can check provider availability online or ask your agent for local recommendations.
Update Your Address
Start redirecting mail and updating your address with key contacts: bank, employer, ATO, Medicare, driver’s licence, and any subscriptions. Australia Post also offers a redirection service to catch anything you miss
Tip: Create a running list of who you’ve updated, it’s easy to lose track when you’re juggling moving chaos.
Explore Your Neighbourhood
Now for the fun part; discovering your new local favourites. Try the nearest café, check out nearby parks, and introduce yourself to neighbours. It’ll help you feel at home faster and make the transition less overwhelming.
Tip: If you have time before moving in, do a “practice day” from your new place, where’s the best coffee? What’s your new commute like?
Take a Breath (and a Bow)
You’ve done it, you’re officially a homeowner. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of pride and uncertainty as you adjust to homeownership. That’s why now is the perfect time to get organised for the long run: set up your loan repayments, learn about offset accounts, and start planning how to manage and maintain your home over the long term.
